ATS resume checker: your score and every fix

Drop your PDF or Word resume. The page reads it the way a parser does, scores it out of 100 on 13 checks, and lists each fix with the reason. Paste the job post too and see which keywords are missing. Other checkers show the score and sell the fixes; here both are free.

Your resume

Drop your resume here, or click to choose PDF or DOCX, under 12 MB

Your file never leaves this tab. Nothing is uploaded. The PDF and Word readers are open-source libraries served from this site, loaded only when you choose a file.

The match is shown next to the score, not mixed into it. Nothing you paste leaves your browser.

Score and fixes

The result appears here.
What you get, all free:
  • A score out of 100, with the weight of every check
  • The full fix list, each with a one-line reason
  • Keywords matched and missing against the job post
  • What a parser sees: sections, contact block, dates

How it works

1

Drop the file

PDF or DOCX, or paste the text. The reader library loads from this site the first time and reads the file inside the tab.

2

See what a parser sees

The text is cut into sections by heading, the contact line and the dates are pulled out, bullets are counted, the layout is tested for columns, tables and images.

3

Fix, then check again

Every failed check says what to change and why. Paste the job post to see the missing keywords and where each one should go. Re-drop the file after the edit.

How the score is computed

Thirteen checks. Each one gives full, half or no points (some scale with a ratio, like the share of bullets that start with a verb). The weights add up to 100:

CheckWhat passesWeight
Contact lineEmail and phone as plain text near the top; LinkedIn optional10
SummaryA Summary section of four lines or fewer (about 80 words)6
Standard headingsSummary, Skills, Experience, Education found by name; unusual headings flagged12
Readable datesMonth Year to Month Year (or Present) on each job; gaps over 6 months are shown, not penalised8
Verb-first bullets80% or more of bullets open with a doing verb (list of 148 verbs)14
Bullets with a number40% or more carry a number, percentage or amount12
Length1 page under 5 years of experience, 2 pages otherwise; estimated at 450–600 words a page for pasted text8
Simple layoutOne column, no tables, no images; text stream in reading order (PDF and DOCX only)10
Plain charactersNo symbol fonts or stylised letters, no repeated header or footer5
No first personNo I, me, my4
No clichésNo "team player", "passionate", "responsible for" openers and the like5
File nameCarries your name; no "final", "new", "(1)"2
No personal details or salaryNo photo, date of birth, marital status, father's name, ID numbers, declaration or CTCsalary line4

The keyword match takes the words and two-word phrases the job post repeats (common words removed), groups them into tools, skills and soft words, and looks for each one in your resume. It is shown as "found x of y", separate from the score, because a resume stuffed with keywords is not a better resume.

Two worked examples

Both are made up. Load one and the checker scores it live, so what you see is the real output, not a picture of it.

Example 1 (made up)

Fresher, old Indian format

Objective instead of a summary, a "Personal Details" block with date of birth and father's name, a declaration at the end, bullets that start with "Responsible for", not one number.

  • What the checker finds: an Objective where a Summary should be, no readable job dates, bullets with no verb and no number, "I" five times, personal details, a declaration line, a CTCsalary line.
  • The three fixes that move the score most: rename Objective to Summary and cut it to three lines; rewrite each bullet verb-first with a number; delete the personal block.

Example 2 (made up)

Six years, mostly right, one gap

Standard headings, dates on every job, numbers in most bullets, one gap of eight months between jobs, one "passionate" in the summary.

  • What the checker finds: a score in the nineties, the gap shown as information (not a penalty), one cliché to replace.
  • Then paste a job post and see which of its tools are missing from the Skills line.

Questions people ask

Is my resume uploaded anywhere?

No. The file is read inside your browser tab by two open-source libraries served from this website (pdf.js for PDF, mammoth for DOCX). No request carries the resume, the job post or the results anywhere. Close the tab and it is gone.

How is the score computed?

Thirteen rule-based checks, each with a weight that is printed next to it: contact line 10, summary 6, standard headings 12, readable dates 8, bullets that start with a verb 14, bullets with a number 12, length 8, simple layout 10, plain characters 5, no first-person pronouns 4, no clichés 5, file name 2, no personal details or salary 4. Full marks on everything is 100. The keyword match against a job post is shown separately and never changes the score.

Does an ATS really reject resumes on its own?

Mostly no. An applicant tracking system stores your resume, parses it into fields (name, jobs, dates, skills) and lets recruiters search and filter. What gets you skipped is a parse that loses your dates or skills, and a search for a keyword that is not on your page. This checker tests exactly those two things. We do not quote rejection percentages because we have not seen a dated source that measured one.

PDF or DOCX, which is safer?

A PDF exported from Word or Google Docs (not a scan, not a design tool export) is read well by modern parsers and looks the same everywhere. Send DOCX only when the job post asks for it. Whichever you send, keep one column, no tables, no text boxes, and your contact line in the body of the page, not in the header.

Should I keep my photo, date of birth or current CTCsalary on the resume?

For private companies, a photo, date of birth, marital status and a father's name are not needed and take space; some employers outside India drop such resumes to avoid bias claims. In India many recruiters still expect a photo for some roles, so that one is your call. Current or expected salary should never be on the resume: it anchors the offer before you have spoken.

After the resume gets you the call

The resume gets you the interview. The interview is where it goes wrong.

"Walk me through this gap." "Why only 0.3%, what was left?" The follow-ups come from the bullets you just fixed. ClapAssist is a Mac and Windows app that listens to the call and shows you what to say. It stays out of screen share on every plan; only you can see it.
