Interviewers want two things from a story: what you did, and what changed because of it. Put one story into four parts and check both are there.

1. Situation: where and what was wrong Keep it under 20% of the answer
2. Task: what you were responsible for "I", not "we"
3. Action: what you did, step by step The biggest part. Doing words: found, fixed, wrote, asked.
4. Result: what changed A number, a time saved, or a before and after

    The story is ready. The follow-up is not.

    What the checklist looks for

    It is a checklist, not a score. Four things, each either present or not:

    1. Situation has at least 15 words, enough to place the story.
    2. Task says what you owned: it uses "I", "my" or "I was".
    3. Action is in the first person and has doing words (found, fixed, wrote, called, tested, and so on), not "we decided".
    4. Result has a number, a percentage, a time, or a before-and-after word like "dropped" or "went up".

    The balance bar shows how many of your words go to each part. Most of them should be in Action. If Situation is over 20%, cut it. The example stories are made up, so replace every line with your own.
