Questions about Microsoft interviews

What are the steps in the Microsoft hiring process?

Microsoft's careers pages name three steps: interviews, role exercises and decision. If you advance, the next interviews vary by role and may include meeting future teammates and colleagues from other teams. Some roles add a coding exercise, a portfolio review or a presentation of other work samples. Your recruiter follows up with the outcome as soon as a hiring decision is made. Ask your recruiter which of them apply to your job.

What does Microsoft look for in candidates?

Microsoft says its interviews focus on parts of its culture, starting with a growth mindset: people who learn new skills fast. It also looks for openness to other views, working across teams (One Microsoft) and real care for customers. Microsoft wants to see how you think, not only what you know, and says it does not expect you to know everything. It aims to assess fundamental knowledge, capability and learning potential.

How should I prepare for a Microsoft interview?

Use the job description to pick the key skills, and prepare real examples of the situation, what you did, the result and what you learned. Microsoft recommends the STAR(R) model: Situation, Task, Action, Result, Reflection. When solving a problem or writing code, ask clarifying questions, state your assumptions and talk through your approach. Read up on the tech industry and Microsoft, and bring your own questions to ask. You may send a thank-you email to the recruiter, who passes it to the hiring manager and interviewers. Then say the answers to the questions below out loud, once each, before the day.

Are these the exact questions Microsoft will ask?

No one outside Microsoft can promise that. ClapAssist wrote these 56 questions for Microsoft's seven jobs from the work each job involves; they are practice, not a leak. When candidates send us the questions they were really asked and we approve them, they appear in the box on this page, with a count once three or more people name the same one.
