What a HireVue interview is, what HireVue says its AI does and does not look at, what employers can switch on, and a prep plan with AI that keeps your answers your own. Every HireVue fact is linked to HireVue's own page.
HireVue interview AI scores what you say, not how you look. HireVue's 2026 Explainability Statement says its AI "relies exclusively on what candidates say in their interview responses" and does not analyze facial expressions, body language, your background or tone of voice. You can use AI to prepare: practice questions, drafting stories, timing yourself, feedback on recorded answers. Using AI to answer during a recorded HireVue is a different thing, and many employers ask you to agree to answer in your own words first.
So the honest plan is simple. Prepare with AI, practice out loud until a two or three minute answer feels normal, then record the real interview yourself.
ClapAssist, which publishes this page, makes an AI interview assistant and free practice tools. They come up briefly near the end.
Key takeaways
HireVue is software that employers use to run interviews and tests. HireVue hosts it, but the company you applied to picks the questions, the timing and the rules (HireVue help center). Your invitation tells you which format you got.
| Format | What happens | Is AI involved? |
|---|---|---|
| On Demand (one-way, recorded) | You see a question, as text or a short video, and record your answer alone. Some questions ask for a written essay or multiple choice instead. HireVue's FAQ says most have five to eight questions with several minutes for each. | Only if the employer added an AI-scored assessment. Not every HireVue interview has one. |
| Live | A scheduled video call with a real person from the company, "much like a traditional video call" (HireVue). | A person runs it. The employer decides what else is used. |
| AI Interviewer | An AI agent asks questions and "probing follow-up questions, in a natural two-way conversation" and scores each answer against the role's criteria (HireVue). | Yes. HireVue says the scores are "an input to recruiter judgment" and candidates can opt out. |
| Game-based assessments | Short games inside an On Demand interview that measure skills like problem solving (help center). | Yes. AI scores the games, per the Explainability Statement. |
| Coding assessments | On-demand coding challenges in languages such as Python, Java and JavaScript. HireVue says it flags "potentially plagiarized submissions" (HireVue). | HireVue's tools flag possible plagiarism; the employer reviews the result. |
HireVue's FAQ says most employers use it as an early screening step, in place of a recruiter's phone call, before person-to-person interviews with finalists later on.
Yes, when the employer turns it on. Here is what HireVue itself says, each point from a page we read on 22 October 2026.
What this means for you: eye contact and a perfect background do not change an AI score, because the AI does not look at them. HireVue's tips even say "don't worry about making eye contact with the camera" (interview tips). A clear, specific answer to the actual question does matter. Recruiters may also watch the video, so a tidy setup still helps.
HireVue does not publish one rule for every candidate. Each employer sets its own. But HireVue's 1 October 2025 blog on cheating shows what employers can switch on (HireVue blog, 2025):
Our plain view: if you ticked a box saying you will answer in your own words, reading AI answers during the recording breaks that promise. It can cost you the job, even after an offer. Some employers do not allow any outside help in interviews or assessments. Read the invitation and the agreement screen. If it is not clear, ask the recruiter before you start. Using AI to prepare beforehand is a different thing, and the rest of this guide is about that.
One thing HireVue does document is fine: its own tips say "you can even keep your notes next to you in case you need a reminder during the interview" (interview tips). Short notes you wrote yourself are not the same as a tool writing your answers.
HireVue's own advice is to prepare "like you would for any job interview" and to make "a list of brief stories about challenges you've faced, approaches you took, and results you achieved" (HireVue interview tips). AI helps most with turning that list into answers you can say in time.
This asks the AI to coach you, not to write a script. A script sounds read, and the AI does not know your real results.
An illustrative example for "Tell me about a time you dealt with an unhappy customer":
The better answer is a real event with an action and a result. That is what a transcript-based score can read, and what a recruiter remembers.
HireVue's step-by-step guide for On Demand interviews on a computer (help center) describes it like this:
| Part | Rough time | What to say |
|---|---|---|
| Answer first | 10 seconds | One line that answers the question directly. |
| Situation and task | 20 seconds | Where you were, what had to happen. |
| Action | 60 seconds | What you did, two or three steps. |
| Result | 20 seconds | What changed, with a number if you have a true one. |
| Link back | 10 seconds | Why it matters for this job. |
You do not have to fill the whole response time. Finish early and press Done.

HireVue's help center has separate tips for students applying to campus roles, in a US and a UK version. If you are a fresher in India facing a HireVue round in a campus placement drive, the same rules apply: the employer sets the questions, timing and attempts, and the agreement screen tells you what help is allowed.
For a HireVue interview, the ClapAssist tools that fit are the free practice ones above. ClapAssist's paid product is a desktop AI interview assistant for Mac and Windows that shows answer help during live video interviews on Zoom, Google Meet and Microsoft Teams. It is not made for recorded one-way interviews, and we do not suggest using live help in a HireVue where you agreed to answer in your own words. Some employers do not allow AI help in any interview, so check first. Live call audio and screenshots are never stored; your resume, notes, the written recap and the interview transcript are saved to your account (transcripts can be switched off in Settings and deleted).

ClapAssist is a desktop AI interview assistant for Mac and Windows. In live video interviews on Zoom, Google Meet and Microsoft Teams it shows an answer written from your resume. Sometimes. An employer can add an AI-scored assessment to a HireVue interview, but not every HireVue interview has one. When it is used, HireVue says its AI scores the transcript of what you say against job-related skills, and the employer makes the final decision.
No, according to HireVue. Its Our Science page says it does not use facial analysis to evaluate candidates, and its 2026 Explainability Statement says its AI does not analyze facial expressions, body language, your background or tone of voice. In January 2021 HireVue said it would not use visual analysis in its pre-hire algorithms going forward.
Check the employer's rules first. HireVue lets employers show a pre-interview agreement such as "I agree to answer all questions in my own words", and its platform can flag when you switch tabs or windows. Reading AI-written answers during the recording can break that agreement. Using AI to prepare beforehand is the safe way to use it.
HireVue's help center says the three practice questions can be redone as many times as you need, and no one else sees them. For real questions, the employer sets the number of attempts, shown on a screen before you begin. Once you submit an answer you cannot go back to it.
HireVue's 2026 Explainability Statement says candidates see an AI notice before an AI-scored assessment and can opt in or out. If you opt out, recruiters rate your recorded answers by hand on the same scales. You can also ask the employer for accommodations, such as more time.
HireVue's FAQ says most video-based assessments take under 20 to 30 minutes, usually five to eight questions with several minutes each, and suggests setting aside 45 minutes to be safe.
ClapAssist hears the call from your own computer, so it works with any interview that plays through your speakers or headphones: the apps above, a call in a browser tab, a coding round shared on a video call, or a phone call taken on your laptop. No bot joins the meeting and nothing is installed on the interviewer's side. It is not built for locked-down test sites like HackerRank or CoderPad.
The ClapAssist AI mock interview and interview simulator are free in the browser, with no account. Every ClapAssist account also gets 10 free minutes of the desktop app, once.
